Virgilio Almario

On January 5, 2017, it was announced that National Artist for Literature and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) chairperson Virgilio Almario is the new chairperson of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

This great Filipino poet is known by his pen name “Rio Alma.” He is a National Artist for Literature.

As of 2016, he is the chairman of the Commission on the Filipino Language (Tagapangulo ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino).

Virgilio Almario was born in San, Miguel, Bulacan. Date of birth: March 9, 1944. More known by his pen name “Rio Alma.” Also famous as a translator of poems, plays, and novels, particularly of the works of Jose Rizal. Won the Palanca Award for Poetry of 1970 for his Peregrinasyon at Iba pang mga Tula. Has a broad knowledge of world poetry particularly of the contemporary school. His themes range from nature and love to contemporary problems. His “Dolores” describes a teacher dreaming of her past.

Si Virgilio Almario ay isinilang sa San Miguel, Bulakan. Araw ng kapanganakan: Marso 9, 1944. Lalong kilala sa taguring “Rio Alma.” Tanyag din bilang tagapagsalin ng mga tula, dula at nobela, lalo na ng mga akda ni Jose Rizal. Nagkamit ng gantimpalang Palanca noong 1970 para sa kanyang Peregrinasyon at Iba pang mga Tula. Malawak ang kaalaman tungkol sa panulaan sa daigdig, lalong-lalo na sa makabagong panulaan. Ang saklaw ng kanyang mga paksa ay ang kalikasan, pag-ibig at mga problemang pangkasalukuyan. Ang kanyang Dolores ay naglalarawan ng isang gurong nangangarap ng kanyang nakalipas.
