The plant belongs to the same gourd family as melons, cucumbers and squash. Its fruit (an edible vegetable) is what Filipinos call sayote.
The most common preparation in Philippine cuisine is to cut it up and sauté it with meat or shrimp for a simple dish called ginisang sayote.
