Spelling variations: mongo, monggo, mungo

Called balatong in other parts of the Philippines.

Mongo soup is a popular Filipino dish customarily eaten on Catholic meatless days such as Fridays and the Holy Week of the Lenten season.  When meat is allowed, a few pieces of pork or shrimp are added for flavor.
