TAMBUTSO

tambutso
vehicle muffler

tambutso
smoke belcher

from the Spanish word tambucho, meaning a hatch on the deck of a ship (sailors climb through the opening to climb up from within the ship to the outside)

A tambutso is technically a device for reducing the amount of noise emitted by cars and trucks. The British call it a silencer.

In the Philippines it is seen less as a noise-reducer and more as a pipe out of which dark exhaust gases are emitted. The word tambutso has a negative connotation.  A chain smoker will be referred to as parang (similar to a) tambutso.

Parang tambutso kung manigarilyo si Ben.
Ben smokes like a chimney.
