As you can see in the picture. the rambutan fruit is covered with spines. But these spines are pliable and soft to touch. The Philippine variety of rambutan has a thicker skin and is slightly rounder than the ones in the photograph.

Foreigners say the flesh reminds them of the lychee fruit, but the taste is not as sweet.
