The pasyon was the most complex and important of the lyric poetry in early Philippine literature. The earliest version published in 1704 by Gaspar Aquino de Belen. A later version appeared in in 1814.  They were both written in Tagalog and became the basis for the practice of public recitations called pabasa,  performed during the Lenten season.
