This Filipino word derives from the Spanish abrelatas meaning “opener of cans.”

Note the “s” in Spanish but the Tagalog has no “s” in singular form.

Also sometimes written as two separate words with or without a hyphen.

The Spanish word abrir means ‘to open’ and lata means ‘can.’

Kumuha ka ng abrelata.
Get a can opener.

Gumamit ako ng abrelata.
I used a can opener.

A more common native Tagalog way of referring to such a tool is pangbukas ng de lata or pangbukas ng lata. The word bukas means open.
